Activity 2: Engagement

Live long and prosper my fellow nerd compadres!  Now that you have jazzed up your blogs, let’s take your presentations "To Infinity and Beyond!"  Today’s students expect (and need) something engaging.  Luckily for us, there are some fantastic web-based tools for us, and for our students.

Pear Deck:
Robocop was part man, part machine and all cop. Pear Deck is part presentation, part assessment, and all awesome. Pear Deck was founded by educators to help teachers make their teaching more active, interactive, and easy.  Pear Deck allows you to plan and build interactive presentations directly from your Google Drive.  Every student can join the live session on his or her device as an active participant!  Watch the following demo and then go to https://www.peardeck.com/ for more information and to create your own!

When you make a Pear Deck you have to link it in your blog.  You can't embed a Pear Deck because of its interactive nature.  To link the Pear Deck you need to go the the 3 bars at the top left corner of the page. This will open a menu. Choose share from the menu which will open the Pear Deck in your Google Drive (you can also open your Pear Deck from Google Drive for easy access).  When you are in Google Drive click on the Pear Deck file then click on the share icon which looks like a head and shoulders with a + next to it. Click on Get shareable link and copy that link to your blog.  This link should give other teachers access to view your Pear Deck.

Powtoon:
Powtoon provides the images and tools to create an animated video or presentation.  Several of the templates are free, enough to keep your students interested and your presentations varied, although there is a pay option if you are craving more!  Watch the demo below for an explanation and then go to https://www.powtoon.com/edu-home/ to learn more and start creating. There are 2 ways to create a Powtoon when you get to the website; Studio and Slides. Slides is easier to use and is like a Super PowerPoint. Studio is more powerful and has more animation features for a more unique presentation. (For students to create using Powtoon they must be over 13.)

Movenote:
Movenote is a presentation creator that allows you to add content from your computer or Google Drive such as documents, pictures, worksheet, and more.  Your files are converted into slides, then you can record your message.  While recording you can highlight your main ideas and advance through the slides.  Then save, and share.  You can attach Movenote to your Google Drive and new features allow you to send a video presentation directly from Gmail. Watch the following demo and then go to https://www.movenote.com/ for more information, lots of tutorials, and to create your own!

Explee:  ($ - paid site after the 14 day free trial)
This tool allows you to create “whiteboard animation” or “video scribing” to help you explain or present your content.  Below is a convincing commercial for the power of video presentations in the classroom.  This tool provides only a free 14 day trial, but then it is a paid site.  The other tools listed for this activity have more free options, but this will give you a little motivation for what these presentation tools can do for you in the classroom. (No info on COPPA compliance, do not have students under 13 use Explee to create.)
(In Activity 4 we will show you how to upload your video presentations into YouTube, so you would want to upload this before your 14 day trial expires.)

Go to https://explee.com/ to watch the trailer or create your first video.
